Did you know that each time you throw out trash anywhere you are not supposed to you could be killing a whale? Recently a dead whale was found in Norway with over 30 plastic bags in its stomach. The problem with plastic is its nonbiodegradable; this means that if you throw away a piece of plastic, it may eventually find its way into an animal.
This makes plastic pollution one of the biggest problems facing the planet today, to get an idea of how much plastic you use you should take a look at an experiment done by an environmental activist named Rob Greenfield. What he did was he decided to collect every single piece of garbage he creates in a month. He ended up wearing lots of trash.
The thing is we throw away 50% of plastics we use in a day, for instance, that coke bottle you left sitting on a bench somewhere or that plastic bag you used to carry your lunch with. The question is what you can do to help save the planet?
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
Imagine if everyone in your neighborhood decided to throw away all their plastics out the window, by the end of the day the area will look like a dump. So instead of throwing out plastics e.g. a bottle, you should reuse it to carry water or recycle it if you have no use for it.
The point is if it can be reused, use it, and if you have no use for it recycle it. It is also a good idea to pay attention to what you are buying. If you can, choose products that are environmentally friendly and support companies that are friendly to the environment.
I know it’s not fun to pick up trash on a Saturday morning or on your free time, however, when you volunteer the little you do does more for the environment than a person sitting somewhere complaining about how bad things have gotten.
Not much is required of you; all you have to do is if you see something wrong you should correct it. E.g., if you see plastic papers on the ground put them in a bin don’t leave them for the next person or the trash man.
Avoid Wasting Stuff
The problem with our lifestyles today is there is no balance, for instance, in some places people are dying because of lack of water and in others people are flushing millions of gallons of water down the toilet. What you can do is avoid flushing your toilet when it’s not necessary and avoid wasting water in general.
Instead of wasting water in toilets, I suggest that you try compost toilets and other environmentally friendly methods of doing things.
Other things you can do to save the planet are:
- Recycle glass and other nonbiodegradables
- Buy recycled paper
- Start using refillable bottles instead of buying and throwing plastic bottles
- Use compact fluorescent bulbs
- Ditch the car and start riding a bicycle
It all boils down to common sense if you know something is not good for the environment don’t do it. If you have more to say to for this post then let us hear you out.
